WE SELL ENTHUSIASM (and scion)

Welcome to our suburban oasis of pawpaws and persimmons. It is our mission to climate test, make accessible and to help popularize these outstanding tropicalesque fruits. We have most modern cultivars as well as a unique selection of hybrid persimmons for trial in USDA climate zones 6 and 5. Scions are available in winter, from Jan 15th- March 15th. Locally, fruit is available Sept 15h until the end of the season sometime in early November.

Gora Goverla (3rd generation hybrid persimmon)

Featured cultivars - Persimmon!

Nikitskaya Bordovaya
(Nikita’s Gift)

The classic Ukrainian hybrid, from the 1970’s breeding program at Yalta. This one is hardy to -10F with a little leeway, but generally only fully hardy to Zone 6b. In zone 6a it may die back during extrme cold events.

Zone 5b!

Goverla 1 (M. Zeldi)

Part of our small Heritage collection, This cultivar is offspring of the 3rd generation Gora Goverla, with a bigger and tastier fruit. M. Zeldi was an amateur who worked with persimmon for decades.

Dar Sofiyivky / Gift of Sofiyivka / ”Sophie’s Gift”

Mandarin-colored persimmons hang down like strings of pearls on this remarkably cold-hardy new hybrid from Ukraine. V. Derevyanko’s effots have given rise to Gift of Sofiyivka, aka. “Sophie’s Gift” (tongue in cheek of course - “Sophie” is a park, not a person)

Exclusive to Ockoo Farm (for now)

Juhl / Yates

One of the more classic American persimmon cultivars; this one makes a very large fruit. Tasty most years, but can be bland during some. Yates is a vigorous tree which generates persimmons by the hundreds. A decade-old tree will regularly produce large crops of almost 2” fruits.

Adolf Lischuck

Another of V. Derevyanko’s excellent hybrids, with a medium-sized fruit, prolific bearing, outstanding cold tolerance (to -18F), and delicate flavor.

Scions for 2025 - check back mid-January!

Zone 6b!

Pamyati Chernyaeva
”Chernyaev’s Memory”

The largest and arguably most delicious of V. Derevyanko’s 4th generation hybrids, with a fruit regularly over 300g, prolific bearing, decent cold tolerance (to approximately -12F).

UKR 15-9
Unreleased Derevyanko

A medium-sized fruit with a kaki-like exterior, and a smooth, American-persimmon flavored jelly interior. It has just the most sublime flavor.

Sosnovskaya

V. Derevyanko’s delicious hybrid. This one is rated very highly for its flavor, bearing habits, uniform acorn-shaped fruit and marketable quality.

FEATURED CULTIVARS - Pawpaws!

Kentucky Legend

  • Woody Walker’s latest introduction, a chance Lehman find and likely seedling of Jerry’s Big Girl (250-39) crossed with Jerry’s Delight (250-30) Described as having a flavor profile similar to “Sunflower” with a banana-popsicle dominance to the main flavor.

Susquehanna

  • For the past 20 years, R. Neal Peterson’s “Susquehanna” has defined excellence in pawpaw fruit texture, size and flavor. It’s firm flesh and punch-in-the-face of everything great about pawpaw makes it a winner with people who love deep, complex flavor.

Potomac

  • Potomac is R. Neal Peterson’s largest pawpaw, a sister to Susquehanna. It’s fruit is large, medium-flavor intensity, with melon-like tones and in general is a nice smooth pawpaw delight.

allegheny

  • Alegenny is R. Neal Peteson’s star for flavor. It is a high-end & refined, citrusy-toned marvel. The fruits on this one are smaller & a bit seedier, the tree benefits from thinning in spring, but it’s the exquisite flavor that keeps this one in our top 10

SRI Gold

  • Sri Gold aka “Sri Vishnu” is Blake Cothron’s recent selection from Kentucky State University’s HI Orchard Seed. The parents are most likely Sunflower and Susquehanna, as it as traits of both in the flavor and texture of the fruit.

Sunsprout

  • Sunsprout is a seedling of the classic Indiana cultivar Sunflower, one of Ken Drabik’s outstanding modern selections from the Chicago area. Thank to Buzz Ferver @ Perfect Circle Farm for introducing us to this one.

Dr. Chill

  • Dr. Chill is a namesake, in honor of someone who has NO CHILL. Thanks again to Buzz Ferver to introducing us to this one.

Regulus

  • Tom Wahl’s “superstar” pawpaw, named for a bright star in the Northern hemisphere. This is his prized cultivar, offspring of Petersons Shenandoah & Susquehanna with the best characteristics o both, and heavy bearing. This tree makes a lot of flower buds, good scion is hard to come by.

Prima 1216

  • From Montenari Nursery in Italy comes this stellar selection with large, round fruits an smooth caramel-tinged flavor. This is a long-season fruit, ripening towards the end of October here in MA.

Maria’s Joy

  • Maria’s Joy, aka 166-13
Jerry Lehman’s rich, soft & custardy cultivar which showcases more of the earthy, “flat bubblegum” flavor profile the fruit is capable of having

shenandoah

  • Shenandoah is R. Neal Peterson’s favored child of Overleese, with better bearing habits than it’s parent. The fruit is agreeably mild, with a texture like wet marshmallow. The flavor is an accessible mix of pawpaw’s frutiness with a musky banana tone, ripening towards caramel

JBG

  • Jerry’s award-winning cross for both size and flavor. This one bears flowers prolifically, even on young trees, setting these massive fruits often nearing a pound. It is also a consistent bearer, with good uniformity. The fruit’s flesh is soft, custardy.
